DARWIN’s first LGBTQIA + choir to showcase their collective talents for the first time during the final weekend of the Darwin Pride Festival
DARWIN’s premier LGBTQIA + choir will showcase their collective talents for the first time during the final weekend of the Darwin Pride Festival. True Colors Chorus Darwin will present Songs of unity, pride, love at the Browns Mart Theater this Friday at 7 p.m.
Founder and choir member Nico Forster-Jordan said she wanted to do something for the local LGBTQIA + community when she created the group.
“I’ve always loved choral singing in the south and when I looked around to see if there was a queer choir here in Darwin, I was really disappointed that there wasn’t.” , she said.
âBuilding a community is the raison d’être of the choir. It’s not the money that keeps people in Darwin, it’s the sense of belonging.
The choir began in February this year with local singer and actor Shalom Kaa as musical director.
Mr Kaa said he was initially worried about taking on the role as he was not able to read sheet music, but had since moved into the position.
âWhen I finally signed, the most amazing thing happened; everyone involved just pooled their talents and so we now share the leadership tasks among several members. It’s so collaborative, âhe said.
For the last weekend of the Darwin Pride Festival 2018, True Colors Chorus took the opportunity to give their very first concert.
Mr. Kaa, there was nothing quite like getting ready for a live performance to put the choir members in full swing.
âThe Darwin Pride Committee has been very supportive,â he said.
The choir will perform songs from several genres including pop, jazz, country and musical theater, with a few surprises along the way. The special guest performances of Sherri Lee Volua and CJ Fraser-Bell will also be the highlights of the evening.
